We were fortunate to have Krista Hennebury at our September meeting. In an entertaining and informative presentation, she spoke to us about modern quilting and showed some of her quilts.
After a career as a geologist, Krista pursued her interest in quilting. She gives presentations and trunk shows, leads workshops, hosts retreats and quilt cruises, and blogs. Earlier this year, her book “Make It, Take It” was published.
Krista spoke about the Modern Quilting movement, which grew from the renewed interest in quilting in North America around 2005. Quilting became “cool” again!
She told us that rapid advances in technology in such areas as digital photography and blogging allowed quilters from many places to connect with each other and become online friends, sharing new approaches and techniques for quiltmaking that were innovative and liberating.
Krista said that some of the influences for modern quilters were the Amish, the Quilts of Gee’s Bend, Nancy Crow, Gwen Marston, and Denyse Schmidt, among others.
She described some of the features of modern quilts as the use of negative space, improvisational piecing, asymmetrical designs, and non-traditional gridwork.
Krista’s quilts illustrated a wide variety of traditional and modern approaches to colour, design, construction, and technique, and the promise of innovations to come from her passion for quilting.
