May Meeting with Karen Johnson – Embellishments

Karen Johnson kept our meeting agog with her many embellished quilts and her foil demonstration. The first hour was a showing of her many techniques in small and medium sized quilts. She easily gave credit for these ideas to the many classes and workshops she attended and of course she added her own twist to what she did. We saw many examples of pieced backgrounds, curved piecing, trapunto couching, embedding (washers, tongue depressors, etc) materials right into the quilt, fabric dyeing, applique, machine quilting over the backgrounds then again over toile, and then, yet again over applique.  So much to consider making these pieces of art. It does make you think that maybe stitch in the ditch isn’t the only way to go.

The last hour Karen showed the many ways to use foil with fusibles and glues and the spectacular results. A few of us stayed on and created some samples just to reinforce what we saw.

Thanks again to Karen for all the preparation and most of all for enlightening our view of quilting.

Karen belongs to the Fibre Art Network, (FAN), and the Studio Art Quilt Associates, (SAQA), as well as the Langley Quilt Guild and she gives workshops throughout the Lower Mainland.

Also, thank you to Connie and Linda F for staying to the end to help with tables and chairs and clean-up.
