March 2013 Meeting

Our Program committee brought us another great meeting full of inspiration.

Catherine Nicholls is a local, international artist who has expanded her art from paint to fibre.  She presented and talked about some of her art quilts.  One of Catherine’s particular joys is words – they are often stitched on by free motion writing or applied to the surface of the work.  Below is one example where they were stencilled on with paint.  Lately she has been playing with Sharpies.

Catherine studied holds qualifications in Patchwork and Quilting from City and Guilds and currently assesses City and Guilds online courses with DesignMatters.  She is a 1/3 part of thr3fold and her work travels the globe with SiX and Friends.

Catherine’s work is freeform and leads her on a journey with each piece.  On the right is part of a quilt that was made from a previous quilt that did not quite please her – she cut it up, painted and treated it with chemicals and, finally, it was acceptable.
The books on the table are her art journals.  She learned how to make the books – works of art on their own!
