Grow-a-Quilt 2021 – Step 4 – Dot Block

Other names I have found for this block are the Concentric Square Block and the Cobblestone Block.  It is an easy block and is constructed in the same manner as a Courthouse Step Block.

You decide –

  • what width of row do you want
  • whether you want square or rectangular blocks
  • if the centre and the pieces of the outer box will be the same width
  • colour placement

Dot Block Construction:

  • Finished size 4.5” finished, 5” unfinished
  • From centre fabric cut 1 – 2” square
  • From outside box fabric cut 2 – 2” squares and 2 – 2” x 5” rectangles
  • Sew an outside square to each side of the centre square
  • Sew an outside rectangle to the top and the bottom

Construction for uneven width of centre and outside box:

  • Finished size 4.5” finished, 5” unfinished
  • From centre fabric cut 1 – 1.5” square
  • From outside box fabric cut 2 – 1.5” x 2.25” rectangles and 2 – 2.5” x 5” rectangles
  • Sew a small outside rectangle to each side of the centre square
  • Sew the larger outside rectangles to the top and bottom

Niki of the Vancouver Modern Quilt Guild site gives examples of more sizes.  These are all only examples.  Have fun playing with your boxes.  Remember to share your row in the Grow-a-Quilt Gallery on our website.
