Congratulations to Barb McG who won the 6 house blocks. There was certainly a variety of colours and frames.
This month the block uses one HST square. I happened upon a photo of a quilt of pitchers that had an HST and a summer-y look (something that we can appreciate this time of year), so, I worked out a pattern. At the bottom of this page you will find my inspiration picture.
For this block you will need a small print in a cheerful colour for your pitcher, tone-on-tone for the handle, a small coordinating piece for the label on the pitcher, and solid white, or snowy white on white for the background. Feel free to change aspects of the pitcher. It can have a different handle or spout and/or be shorter or wider but the overall height of the unfinished block should be 11 1/2″.
The following directions are for this pitcher.
MATERIALS
1 – 3″ square of print for the HST for the spout
1 – 5 x 9 1/2″ rectangle of print for the body of the pitcher
1 – 2 1/2″ x 3 1/2″ rectangle of print for the label
1 – 1 1/4″ x 4 1/2″ rectangle of print for handle
2 – 1 1/4″ x 2″ rectangles of print for handle
1 – 3″ square of white background for the HST for the spout
1 – 2 1/2″ x 8 1/2″ rectangle of white for below the spout
1 – 1 1/4″ x 4 1/2″ rectangle of white background for beside the handle
1 – 2″ x 2″ squares for below the handle
1 – 2″ x 3″ squares for above the handle
2 – 2″ x 8 1/2″ strips for the side borders of the block
2 – 2″ x 11 1/2″ strips for the top and bottom border
ASSEMBLY
Decide on the placement of your label. Cut across the body piece above and below the label. Reassemble the body so that it has a label. Trim the body.
Use the two squares to make an HST for the spout. You can choose on which side of the body you would like to have the spout. Sew on the strip below the spout.
For the handle: Sew the two 1 1/4″ strips together, then, sew a handle piece on the top and the bottom. Sew the white rectangles above and below the handle.
Trim to straighten.
I made this piece longer than the body so that one can choose where to place the handle.
Join the handle and the spout to the body.
Add the white border and voilà!
This pattern is a starting point. Perhaps you would like a shorter pitcher, a different handle, a smaller or larger spout. The piece needed for the body of the pitcher is 1 1/2″ taller than the pitcher because there are three seams involved in making the pitcher.
The parameters are
(a) that the bottom white border be from a 2″ strip so that the bottoms of the pitchers line up,
(b) the side borders are made from 2″ strips
(c) that the total height of the unfinished block be 11 1/2″ so that the blocks can be joined in a row.
The wider pitcher I had in pieces at the meeting requires:
1 – 3″ square of print for the HST for the spout
1 – 5 1/2 x 8 1/2″ rectangle of print for the body of the pitcher
1 – 2 1/2″ x 3″ rectangle of print for the label
1 – 1 1/4″ x 3 1/2″ rectangle of print for handle
2 – 1 1/4″ x 2″ rectangles of print for handle
1 – 3″ square of white background for the HST for the spout
1 – 2 1/2″ x 6″ rectangle of white for below the spout
1 – 1 1/4″ x 3 1/2″ rectangle of white background for beside the handle
1 – 2″ x 1 1/2″ square for below the handle
1 – 2″ x 3″ square for above the handle
2 – 2″ x 8 1/2″ strips for the side borders of the block
1 – 2″ x 11 1/2″ strip for the bottom border
1 – 3″ x 11 1/2″ strip for the top border
This is my inspiration picture found in random surfing on the Internet. I created the patterns for our use. I did trace the information with the picture to a magazine from England – Love Patchwork and Quilting. It was in a March issue from several years ago.
